The Terrific Twos program is designed for children who turn two years old before the Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) cutoff date of September 30 of the year in which they are enrolled.
Families may choose a two-day-per-week schedule (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday), with the option to enroll in both sessions for a four-day program. Each class is limited to up to eight children and is led by two full-time teachers to ensure a supportive and engaging learning environment.
Children are not required to be potty trained for enrollment in this class.
Program Overview
The Terrific Twos program embraces the natural curiosity, enthusiasm, and “sponge-like” learning style of our youngest learners. This is an important year focused on building early foundations in friendship, routine, independence, and classroom transitions.
Children are provided with a variety of age-appropriate learning materials, including puzzles, games, soft and hard blocks, transportation toys, housekeeping play materials, and a dedicated library corner. Learning experiences also include hands-on exploration through science activities, creative crafts, and introductory technology.
Learning Focus
Vocabulary Development
Children are encouraged to grow their vocabulary through daily conversation, shared experiences, storytelling, and guided language development that supports correct word usage and pronunciation.
Fine Motor Skills
Activities such as book exploration, art projects, and manipulatives help strengthen fine motor development and hand-eye coordination.
Self-Help Skills
Children are gently guided in developing independence through everyday routines such as bathroom readiness, dressing skills (like putting on jackets), clean-up routines, snack-time participation, and learning simple manners such as saying a blessing.
Early Academic Exposure
A modified curriculum introduces early learning concepts from older programs, including:
- American Sign Language (ASL)
- Letter of the Week
- Number of the Week
- Color of the Week
- Basic number sequencing
- Shape recognition
Family Engagement
To help support a smooth transition into the school year, a summer meet-and-greet is offered for enrolled two-year-olds and their families. This provides an opportunity to meet teachers, become familiar with the classroom environment, and help children feel comfortable as they begin forming new friendships.
